Energy Management vs. Time Optimization

I'm sitting here writing this from my new living room. There are faint smells of pumpkin in the air from the candle my daughter made me get.

I've got the tv mounted on the wall, the couch & rug perfectly placed, and pops of green in each direction where my old plants have found new homes.

The dining room is stocked with new fall decor (also insisted on by my daughter) and theres a soft new rug that lays beneath the table.

The kitchen cabinets are fully stocked, the bowls, plates, and glasses all in their place.
The pantry and the refrigerator are stocked with our favorites.

Upstairs, my bedroom feels cozy with all of my favorite books & decor.
My bathroom & closet are organized and flow just like I need them to.

I held my first call with my Membership Community this morning in my office space, my journaling space & gym neatly tucked behind me.

When I walk up and down the stairs, a little smirk emerges on my face at all of the plants lined along the rails.

It feels good, homey.

Oh, and I moved in 6 days ago.

6 days ago, four men loaded my entire world onto two trucks and unloaded it at our new "for now" home.
I shared all of the details of the move in my last Newsletter too in case you missed it.

I've moved, what feels like, a thousand times.

Some moves were because we moved to a new city or state, and some because of divorce or other unfortunate circumstances.

Hold on.

Yeah, I just counted. My oldest daughter is 17 and we've lived in 15 different houses since she's been born.

It's kind of crazy to write out.

Needless to say, I'm kind of a pro at moving.

I hate packing, like most people - but I love unpacking and settling into a new space.
It doesn't matter if I owned or rented, it didn't matter if I was staying in the home for a month or if it was a few years, I needed to settle into my space.

To be honest, I think it was this need to create a home for my kids while most of their childhood was chaotic.

That's another story for another blog.

I write all of this because throughout this week, I've been getting messages on Instagram from people telling me they wished they had my energy.

It's such a weird thing to hear when you're tired, haha!
It makes me feel like people think I have this weird superhuman energy, like I can keep going and don't need sleep.

I am a Generator in Human Design which does sometimes help, but my energy isn't what moved me & my family into our new home & unpacked us in 6 days.

My oldest daughter had senior photos done yesterday and I told the photographer that we were mostly unpacked, she said: "Geez, you must have been pulling 15-hr days!"

... I just laughed.

In fact, I did a lot more than pack/unpack over this last week:

  • I had horse riding lessons

  • I organized trash pick up at the old house

  • I took a car load to Goodwill

  • I had an farrier appointment for my horses

  • I got 8+ hours of sleep each night

  • I had our carpets cleaned at the old house

  • I touched up paint on the walls at the old house

  • I walked my dogs

  • I had a meeting with my daughters school

  • I went to pilates class

  • I had a DMV appointment to renew my license

  • I took my dogs to a vet appointment

  • I spent evenings at the ranch to feed horses & muck stalls

  • I took my daughter to get senior photos done

  • I had coffee dates with my best friend

  • I spent time daily working my business

  • I went to Home Depot for some halloween decorations

  • I went to a nail appointment

  • I made a run to Costco to restock

  • I placed an online grocery order

  • I went to Target for new bedding

  • I took my daughter to Home Goods for fall decor

  • I showered and did my skincare

  • I did laundry

... I'm sure there's more in the past 6 days that I've done which I'm not thinking of.

All of this to say, it's not an energy thing.

 It's a TIME OPTIMIZATION THING:

I'll admit it, I'm insanely organized when it comes to my time.
It's actually what I teach and the basis of the business I've created with my Life Coaching.

All of the extras that I listed above were put in my calendar like appointments I can't miss.

I used my Google Calendar & a paper Time Block Planner both, that way I've got a copy of my calendar whether I'm at home or on the go.
If it's on my calendar, it's getting my attention and it's prioritized.

When I look at my planner, I can clearly see where the gaps are in my day.
Those gaps can either be filled with things that move me closer to the highest version of myself or things that bring me further from her.

It's a WILLPOWER THING:

When a one on one client and I connect, I help them create their ideal day.

Like, if you had a magic wand, how would your day flow?
What would you do?
How would it feel?
How would you spend your time?

We create that ideal day, combining the vision with their current reality and they get to leave our sessions with a plan to follow.

Most of the time, they come back to the next call explaining all of the reasons why they couldn't stick to that flow we created together.

I sit there, without judgement, listening to all of their roadblocks & distractions.
I think about all the boundaries and decisions I would be making if I were in their shoes and I communicate those.

But the truth is that it all comes down to willpower.

will·pow·er

/ˈwilˌpouər/

noun

  1. control exerted to do something or restrain impulses.

Simply put, I do what I say/think/want to do.
If it's on my calendar, it's there for a reason, I show up for it.

My gaps are spent with intention because my vision is too big to ignore.

It's a VISION THING:

That magic wand situation I was talking about, mine is strong.

I talk about vision a lot, I've even created a Vision Builder tool to help people create one that literally moves them.

I used this exercise to visualize myself in my new home.

I could see the space in my minds eye.
I took the time to journal out what my ideal day would look like in this new space and how it would flow.
I could see it like I was watching a movie.

With this vision so clear, as boxes landed in my new home, it felt like a no-brainer to spend my gaps organizing my space because I knew how good it was going to feel to flow in this.

With each box that I opened, I could quickly help each piece find it's new home within my space.
And today, 6 days after moving in, I'm living in that vision.

Don't fool yourself anymore, you're not too tired.
You don't need more caffeine or 10 hours of quiet time.

You simply need to get yourself organized, do a gut check of how you're spending your time, and create a vision that gets your body into forward motion.
